For several years North Wiltshire RAYNET has worked with the Prospect Hospice Swindon charity to support their fundraising events. This year we returned to help with their Starlight Night Walk around the town of Swindon. Hundreds of participants walked around the town on either 10km or 15km routes.
RAYNET provided mobile radio operators to support several moving and stationary marshal checkpoints. A portable mast was used at the event headquarters to provide VHF communications for the group across the Swindon town area. Additional amateur radio masts and cross-band repeaters were also used across the course. We used our packet-radio GPS tracking capability to map the locations of the ‘back markers’ in near real time who were carrying special battery powered tracking ‘packs’ provided by the group.
