This weekend the group supported local charity the Prospect Hospice with the Swindon Starlight Walk 2017. As with previous years the route covered 2 distances 15K & 10k covering various parts of Swindon Town with over 300+ in attendance.
We had 13 operators on duty along with 2 RF based APRS trackers clipped to the backpacks of the 2 route sweepers covering 23 Marshall locations.
The event was well enjoyed by all those taking part and those travelling by.

Monday 1st May has once again seen 7 of the groups members providing the event organiser with vital communications on the Bike & Run courses.
Event support ranged from first competitor tracking to the back market/ sweep vehicle. And then a similar support on the run course.
This vital communication allows the organiser to get a clear view of there event and more importantly allow for care/support to those taking part where required.
It was an enjoyable event with more enteries than in previous years.
May Bank Holiday once again saw the group supporting the Big T Triathlon. This event took place at the Trowbridge Sport Centre. The event supported circa 250 entrants as they completed the Swim, Bike & Run routes of various distances. The group supported 7 checkpoints spread over the Bike & Sprint courses ensuring any messages or entrant safety issues where dealt with in a timely manner.
Members of the group once again stepped up to support the yearly Ridgeway Challenge over the August bank Holiday weekend. This event sees a number of RAYNET groups support the event as the walkers follow the Ridgeway to the final point in Avebury.
The event takes place between Saturday startling at 10:00 and completed around Sunday early afternoon.
Communications coverage includes voice but also large amount of data as we collage and forward on the runners Arrival time and departure time at each Checkpoint all the way to the finish.

Several members of the group spent there time supporting the EGB Barbury Castle Ride on 23rd August. This event required us to cover 4 checkpoints, 1 Vet Gate along with the Start/Finish. Message passing is as with most events key to the role we provide, in this event that is around the recording and tracking of the riders along this there Arrival order and times at each location. Whilst the weather was reasonable the event was a success and all riders where very appreciated for the group once again supporting the event, we look forward to working with the event organising team again next year.
Today Saturday 22nd August members of the group are out supporting the Prospect Hospice with a 10k walk from Marlborough College to Avebury Stone Circle and back. Due to the terrain we cover Comms covering the complete route., this is the cross-band link we setup to ensure good coverage. We also have a Byonics APRS tracker deployed to track the progress.
Tonight 4 members of the group are out supporting another group. South Gloucestershire RAYNET are supporting a 10k walk around Badminton Estate ran by Marie Carie.
May Bank Holiday saw the group supporting the Big T Triathlon which took place from the Trowbridge Sport Centre. The event supported circa 250 entrants as they completed the Swim, Bike & Run routes of various distances. The group supported 8 checkpoints spread over the course ensuring any messages or entrant safety issues where dealt with in a timely manner.
Today saw the group support the LDWA Pewsey Downsaround 10, 17, 26 & 35 Mile walk starting and ending at the Pewsey Scout Hut.
After the usual no shows some 212 walkers took part with very few having to drop out. The group worked with the organisers covering all 5 Checkpoints and ensuring the progress of the walker arrival information at each checkpoint was past back to control. We also supplied a portable APRS (GPS tracking) unit with the sweepers which proved invaluable.
We look forward to working with the LDWA on future events.
New Raynet Training Manuals
As part of his role with the S.W. Raynet Associations Data Working Group, Ian G6BJJ has written a series of Training and explanation manuals for the use of Data modes by Raynet in the South West. Particular thanks go to the late Mike Sloan, GU3WHN (former RAYNET Controller Bailiwick of Guernsey), and Nick Johnson 2E0NRJ of Exeter Amateur Radio Society, for their assistance. (These are available to members through the SWRA website.)
In addition, following discussions at the recent SWRA Zone Controllers meeting over a lack of progress in the national scheme, Ian has prepared a set of new and updated Training manuals for use by all SWRA members. He was assisted in this by Chris Sheridan, M0AZQ from Wilts Raynet. The modules are ready and available now via the SW Raynet Association site.
